A Power Factor Panel is an essential component in electrical distribution systems that helps maintain the efficiency and stability of the power supply by improving the power factor of the system. The power factor is the ratio of real power (used to do work) to apparent power (total power supplied). A low power factor indicates inefficiency, as more apparent power is needed to perform a certain amount of work. By correcting the power factor, utilities and industrial users can optimize their electrical systems, reduce costs, and improve overall energy efficiency.

Power factor is a measure of how effectively electrical power is being used. It is expressed as a number between 0 and 1, where:

• A power factor of 1 (or 100%) means that all the electrical power supplied is being used effectively (perfect efficiency).
• A low power factor indicates that a significant amount of the power supplied is wasted and not being effectively used for useful work.

A low power factor is typically caused by inductive loads (such as motors, transformers, and other equipment) that consume reactive power in addition to real power.

1. Power Factor Correction:

   • A Power Factor Panel typically uses capacitors or synchronous condensers to provide reactive power (leading power), which compensates for the lagging reactive power caused by inductive loads. This improves the overall power factor.

2. Automatic Control:

   • Many modern Power Factor Panels are equipped with automatic controllers (such as Automatic Power Factor Controllers (APFC)) that monitor the power factor in real-time and automatically switch the capacitors in and out to maintain an optimal power factor.
